Malorie Rael, a first generation college student, recently returned to her small hometown of Cañon City, CO — an area with vibrant traditions and celebrations around the town’s predominant Hispanic and Italian cultures. Her parents were also both born and raised there. The reason for her visit? The 80th Anniversary Celebration of the Blossom Queen Pageant, where she held the title in 2002. Visiting her hometown always reminds her of the importance of traditions and staying true to herself and her small town roots.

Growing up as an only child, Malorie was set on having a bigger family. She and her husband, John, met at Colorado State University and have been happily married for 15 years! The couple has been blessed with three children, Isaiah (11), Ezekiel (7) and Ramona (6). During Malorie’s pregnancy with Isaiah, he suffered a stroke in utero, which shaped her family’s journey in ways they never expected. Isaiah has cerebral palsy, and struggles each day in achieving all life tasks that come naturally to others. “Through him, we’ve learned patience, empathy, and the importance of enjoying life’s small moments,” Malorie reflects. “His resilience is nothing short of a miracle.”

Malorie has worked in education for 16 years, with the exception of three years when she was a stay-at-home mom to help Isaiah. She currently works at Aurora Quest K-8, as the instruction coach where she supports teachers in building their capacity. She tirelessly advocates for every student to receive the best possible education where they can feel both confident and challenged. “I believe it takes a village to raise a child,” she said. Malorie is currently working to complete a principal licensure program, so she can continue to grow in her educational career journey.

Despite taking care of a family of five, and working full time, Malorie does still make time for enjoying life. She loves to dance, dine out, vacation and attend sporting events. In fact, she and her Dad are season ticket holders, and spend quality time together cheering on the Denver Broncos.

After living out-of-state for 10 years, Malorie and John returned to Colorado and landed in Aurora to raise their children. They fell in love with Painted Prairie because of the community vision — where all are welcome and people can be themselves. And the gorgeous mountain views didn’t hurt, either! They have settled in quite well since they moved in November 2021, and their family attends most of the community events. A favorite memory is from Prairie Harvest Fest where they all dressed up as different Colorado team mascots, with her Dad as the Barrel Man!

Although she’s just a memory in the Blossom Festival Queen Hall of Fame, she’s definitely still a queen in the eyes of her family!
