Shamara Edwards has been serving others for all of her adult life. As a registered nurse, a NICU specialist and ultimately a healthcare management director (not to mention realtor and owner of an IV infusion business), she combined her knack for compassion and precision, and experienced the incredible power of caring. Her success was fulfilling, but Shamara also had dreams of creating her own space where health, diversity and connection could bring people together. Following a recent move from California to Colorado, her dream has become a reality with the opening of her brand new smoothie and juice shop, Mix’d Drink.
Naming her business was a cinch for Shamara. Her own “mix’d” heritage, a blend of Japanese, Filipino and African American cultures, has shaped, defined and inspired her. She even channeled her unique experiences into a children’s book, Not a Panda, a story that celebrates what it means to be multiracial and to love every part of who you are.Her extraordinary grandmother, who owned a soul food restaurant while also raising nine children, inspired Shamara to seek a life of service. When her grandmother was diagnosed with diabetes, Shamara returned her generosity by assisting in every aspect of her care. It was a labor of love, and an invaluable stepping stone into her nursing career.
Shamara shares her Painted Prairie home with her two children. As an avid traveler, she loves the short trips to and from the airport. Her sister and another friend also live in the community, so she had a head start with getting to know neighbors, but she has since met many more and loves the connection she feels here.
“My neighbors are incredibly kind and thoughtful,” she says, “They look out for us, and treat my kids like their own. It’s the small, everyday acts of kindness, the ones rooted in genuine care, that make Painted Prairie feel like home.”
Mix’d Drink is now open in Denver’s Highland district (3120 Zuni St.), offering premium smoothies, bowls, and fresh juice crafted from fresh ingredients, with organic options. If you’re ever in the area, drop in and say hello!
